Throughout my life, I've had a passion for baking and cooking. Some of my fondest memories have been created in the kitchen, and I've always believed that food has a unique way of bringing people together. However, my perspective changed during my freshman year of college when I was diagnosed with celiac disease, an autoimmune disorder that wreaks havoc on the small intestine upon gluten consumption. Suddenly, it felt like my world was turned upside down. I had to relearn how to eat, especially when dining out. Determined to regain control, I dedicated my summer to learning as much as I could about gluten-free cooking and experimenting with various foods and recipes.
Celiac disease affects millions of people worldwide, but what many don't realize is that it impacts every aspect of your life. Continued gluten consumption can lead to infertility, stomach cancer, and irreversible damage to the intestine. Despite the prevalence of this condition, only a handful of restaurants in Tampa Bay offer 100% gluten-free options. While some restaurants may offer gluten-free alternatives, very few take the allergy seriously. Even a trace of gluten can lead to severe health complications; I've experienced hospitalizations more than once due to accidental gluten consumption. In fact, just this week, I spent two days in the hospital, and the recovery process has left me feeling unwell for over a week, with lingering soreness likely to persist for a month.
Finding gluten-free desserts that are both delicious and affordable is a significant challenge. Recognizing this gap in the market, I founded Ela’s Sweets, offering a variety of freshly made baked goods that cater to those with gluten sensitivities.
Millions of people across the world suffer from celiac disease, but what many don't know is it affects every aspect of your life. Continuing to consume gluten leads to infertility, stomach cancer, and irreversible damage to the intestine. Out of the thousands of restaurants in Tampa Bay, only 4 are 100% gluten-free. While many restaurants do have gluten-free options, very few take the allergy seriously, or know that even a crumb of gluten leads to hospitalizations. It's happened to me more than once. (Literally, this week, I spent 2 days in the hospital, passed out, was sick for a week, and will continue to be sore for a month, probably). It's even harder to find desserts that are gluten-free, much less taste good and are worth the extremely high price tag. And so, Ela’s Sweets was born, offering a variety of freshly made baked goods.
At Ela’s Sweets, we take pride in more than just the safety and taste of our products; we prioritize the overall customer experience. Our goal is to ensure that everyone who walks through our doors leaves feeling sweeter and with memories that will last a lifetime.
