Population Threats
Climate Change
Climate change is impacting shark populations in several significant ways:
Temperature Changes:
As ocean temperatures rise, sharks may alter their migratory patterns and
distribution. Some species may move toward cooler waters, potentially leading to shifts in local ecosystems and increased competition for resources.
Oxygen Levels:
Warmer waters hold less oxygen, which can lead to hypoxic conditions that negatively affect
shark health and survival. Low oxygen levels can hinder their ability to hunt and reproduce.
Habitat Loss:
Coral reefs and other critical habitats for sharks are threatened by rising sea temperatures,
ocean acidification, and bleaching events. This loss can impact breeding and nursery areas essential for the
survival of juvenile sharks.
